fader less

.

.

Hello and happy New Year to all. I used to use Cubase but I switched to Studio One which has better support for multi touch screens & midi mapping of macros.

I use many noise gates in my workflow as they minimise or eliminate use of channel faders.

Here is a manual example in a daw.

..

MIdi controlled noise gates & envelope shapers are useful for.

Mixing without using channel faders.
Simplifying automation.

Dub mixing
Effects racks.
A solution to recording external audio when live looping as many can also send midi data. They are also ideal in situations where your too active to use channel faders or have limited screen estate on your pc or Chameleon templates.

Noise gates.

The noise gate responds to user defined conditions and states. The midi note will momentarily enable the gate & the operation can be reversed. eg

An audio signal is present & the gate fades out or mutes the audio.
An audio signal is inactive & gate fades in the audio.

Noise Gates & midi inputs

The majority of the noise gate plug in's will respond to any midi input signal.Unfiltered Audio G8 is the only noise gate i'm aware of that can be assigned to respond to a specific midi note.

Multiple instances

A noise gate may need a midi filter or additional tool so it can be assigned to respond to specific midi data. A volume or envelope shaper is the better option if you desire multiple instances as many have assignable tabs for specific midi notes.

In order of appearance the release times for a minimalist auto fade workflow is.

Polyversemusic. Gatekeeper........Several hours.
Devious Machines. Infiltrator.......Several minutes.
Cableguys Volumeshaper............Twenty seconds
SIR Audio Tools StandardGate.....Seven & a half seconds.
FabFilter Pro-G..........................Five seconds.
Unfiltered Audio G8...................Two seconds.

Computer Music magazine January 2015 has a free  64 bit version of Unfiltered Audio G8.
Drum replacement plug in's also have similar features.

Free plug in effects.

Audiomodern Gatelab..........Several minutes.
Zeek STFU.........................Sixteen seconds.
PressPlay - Envelover...........Ten seconds.             This is featured in the video.
Auburn Sounds- Renegate....Advertised as 2 seconds but is between 2 to 7 seconds.

.
Cockos Reaper Reagate.......Five seconds. It can't be triggered by midi but can send a midi note & the operational state can be inverted.
Dotec - Audio. DeeMute acts as a momentary switch.
